THE SILK ROAD FOUNDATION
A community interest company
About Us
As fate would have it, we were each born at the two ends of The Silk Road, Alastair in Macclesfield and Wendy in Xi'an, China. We have created this community interest company to attract people back to Macclesfield town centre by promoting it's historic, convenient and beautiful location.

Our Story
In April 2019, we read an article in the London Evening Standard by the Chinese Ambassador to the UK extolling the virtues of Macclesfield as the silk capital of the UK and urging a better understanding between the two countries. We soon after went back and were struck by how neglected and empty the town centre had become since I remembered it as a child.
.We were living in north London at the time, rattling around in a house that was used to have the kids and their friends filling it, but was now rather empty as they had all grown up.So we reached out to some local Macc residents to better understand how it was that the town was surrounded by one of the richest catchment areas in the country, was located on the borders of a stunning national park on the one side and was a suburb of Greater Manchester on the other, yet seemed often lacking visitors, tourists and shoppers, except for one Sunday a month when the wonderful Treacle Market is held.
Then came COVID and like most UK towns, Macclesfield suffered further. Our regular trips from London stopped and our plans to attract footfall to the town stopped with them. We were able to help the town a little by securing some PPE from Xi'an during the madness of early 2020, as the article from the Macclesfield Express shows.
Now that the pandemic is thankfully behind us, we have resumed our efforts to promote the town and as of today, we have moved to Cheshire and taken some office space in what was formerly Barclays Bank on Park Green to act as a base from which to further our efforts.
But, and it's a big but..... we need your help! Without the support of the community, patrons, benefactors and volunteers, this undertaking will surely falter and Macclesfield will continue to languish. With it, however, we think we can help to revitalise the town centre for the benefit of the residents and businesses within it.
